"…And what does the LORD require of you? But to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God." (Micah 6:8)

The Hebrew verb halak (הלך) means "to walk" or "to go". The first time halak (הלך) is mentioned in the Bible tells a powerful story of its origin and meaning.
The Bible teaches that in the beginning the heavens, the earth, and all their hosts were finished in chapter one of Genesis. Chapter two begins with God ending His work, resting on the seventh day, and making it holy.
“The LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed.”(Genesis 2:8)
Eden is often defined as "a place of delight, pleasure, or paradise." I appreciate Christian author and minister Dr. Myles Munroe's translation of the word Eden (עֵדֶן), based on the original Hebrew, as "a spot for the moment where the presence of God is an open-door to heaven." That sounds like paradise to me!
“Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four riverheads.”(Genesis 2:10)
Here are the names and meanings of the four riverheads.
-
Pishon [Pee-shon] – “Increase” or "overflow"
-
Gihon [Gee-hon] – “Bursting forth”
-
Hiddekel [Hid-deh-kel] (Tigris) – “Rapid” or "darting"
-
P’rat [Per-raht] (Euphrates) – “Fruitfulness" or "abundance”
In Genesis chapter two, I hear the Word of God describing how, from the place of access to His presence, the source of creation overflows—bursting forth rapidly in a fruitful abundance of living water. This is the scene where the verb halak (הלך), as a root, first appears in the Bible, representing God's presence flowing through the garden.
“The name of the third river is Hiddekel; it is the one which goes toward the east of Assyria…”(Genesis 2:14)
This same word used to describe the presence of God's movement in the beginning is used throughout the Hebrew Bible to describe walking for us as well.
"And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day…" (Genesis 3:8)
Teach me Your way, O LORD; I will walk in Your truth…(Psalms 86:11)
“Oh house of Jacob, come and let us walk in the light of the LORD." (Isaiah 2:5)
How we walk reveals who we follow, what we value, and how our story unfolds.
